The Royal Thai Government Scholarships offered through the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) stand among the most respected academic awards available to students across Asia. These scholarships open doors for outstanding learners to pursue advanced degrees in an environment built on research, innovation, and global collaboration. AIT has long been known for attracting gifted students from all corners of Asia, and the Royal Thai Government continues that tradition by supporting scholars who demonstrate exceptional academic merit and strong potential for leadership in their fields. These awards are designed not only to promote academic excellence but also to strengthen regional cooperation and cultural understanding across Asia. Students who earn these scholarships gain access to world-class facilities, internationally recognized faculty, and multidisciplinary research opportunities that prepare them to become future experts and changemakers in their respective industries.

The scholarships offered under the Royal Thai Government umbrella include several distinct categories tailored to doctoral and master’s students. These categories include His Majesty the King’s Scholarships for Doctoral and Master’s Programs, Her Majesty the Queen’s Scholarships for Master’s Programs, and the Loom Nam Khong Pijai (GMS) Scholarships for Master’s Programs. Each award supports a different academic path while sharing the same overarching mission: to promote high-level education and foster strong regional networks among Asian countries.

His Majesty the King’s Scholarships for Doctoral Programs

Among the available awards, the Doctoral-level King’s Scholarship is the most prestigious. It is offered to exceptionally talented candidates who hold strong bachelor’s and master’s degrees in relevant fields. Applicants must have an outstanding academic record with a minimum GPA of 3.5 at both levels. The award supports students enrolling in doctoral programs at the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) and the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD). These schools offer programs ranging from civil engineering and electric power systems to sustainable energy, environmental engineering, and natural resource management.

Priority for this scholarship goes to applicants from Bhutan, Laos PDR, Timor-Leste, ASEAN countries, and other Asian regions that maintain strong academic and diplomatic ties with Thailand. This regional focus ensures that scholars from diverse Asian communities come together in one academic hub, strengthening cultural exchange and cooperation.

The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, registration fees, on-campus accommodation, and a bursary for daily living expenses. Doctoral studies at AIT span 41 months, equivalent to seven academic semesters, and this scholarship supports the student for the entire duration. The overall value of the package is approximately 1.96 million Baht, reflecting the Thai government’s strong investment in academic excellence and future leadership.

Eligibility Requirements for Doctoral Programs

Applicants must present a strong academic profile demonstrating consistent achievement. The minimum requirement is a GPA of 3.5 at both the bachelor’s and master’s level from an accredited institution. Additionally, applicants must submit two recommendation letters from academic supervisors or professors who can attest to their intellectual potential, research capability, and commitment to advanced study. A research proposal is also mandatory, outlining the intended research focus and demonstrating alignment with AIT’s programs.

Because AIT follows international standards, applicants must meet specific English proficiency requirements. Acceptable test results include an IELTS score of 6.0 (both overall and writing) or an equivalent AIT English Test score of 6.0. These requirements ensure that incoming scholars have the communication skills necessary to succeed in a multicultural academic community.

His Majesty the King’s Scholarships for Master’s Programs

The Master’s-level King’s Scholarship is tailored to applicants who have excelled academically during their undergraduate studies. Students from any Asian country are eligible, making the competition broad and diverse. This scholarship covers master’s programs offered through the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) and the School of Management (SOM). These academic fields include programs in engineering, data analytics, business administration, information systems, logistics, and more.

Recipients of this scholarship are selected based on academic merit, research potential, and commitment to contributing positively to their home countries after graduation. The Thai government’s objective is to elevate skills and knowledge across Asia, and this scholarship plays a major role in achieving that mission.

Her Majesty the Queen’s Scholarships for Master’s Programs

The Queen’s Scholarship is dedicated specifically to master’s programs related to environmental studies. These programs are offered within the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD). Students studying environmental sustainability, natural resources management, climate change, environmental engineering, and related fields will find this scholarship a perfect match.

The scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievements during their undergraduate studies and who show strong potential for contributing to environmental development in their respective countries. Since Asia faces environmental challenges ranging from climate change to resource management, this scholarship helps empower future leaders who will tackle these issues through research, innovation, and policy development.

Loom Nam Khong Pijai (GMS) Scholarships for Master’s Programs

The Loom Nam Khong Pijai Scholarships were created to support human resource development within the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS). They honor HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and reflect Thailand’s dedication to fostering education and cooperation among neighboring countries. Eligible applicants come from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, and the southern provinces of China (Yunnan and Guangxi).

The scholarship focuses on four major developmental areas:

• Infrastructure Development
• Energy Technology
• Oil, Gas, and Natural Resources
• Environmental Engineering and Management

These fields are crucial for the long-term development of GMS countries, and the scholarship ensures that promising students have the chance to study in a strong academic environment that emphasizes innovation and sustainability. The program also strengthens collaboration among GMS nations by allowing students to study and conduct research together at AIT.

The scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, and a living bursary for the full duration of the 22-month master’s degree program. The total value of the award is approximately 1.10 million Baht.

Eligibility Requirements for GMS Scholarships

Applicants must have completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.5 in relevant academic fields. Strong English proficiency is necessary, and applicants must meet AIT Language Center requirements IELTS 6.0 (overall and writing) or AIT EET 6.0. Candidates are encouraged to demonstrate interest in development topics within the GMS region, as their future contributions will help the region’s progress.
